Researchers seek volunteers for gait training study
octubre 23, 2023
Researchers are seeking volunteers for a study to determine the effectiveness of a high intensity interval gait training program for persons with multiple sclerosis.
Participant requirements:
Must be able to walk for six minutes unassisted, with or without an assistive device.
Must be able to use a stationary, back-supported bicycle for 20 minutes.
Must have had no exacerbations within the past four weeks.
The time commitment is for six weeks, two times a week for one hour.
Participants will be randomly assigned to either the high intensity interval gait training program or one of two "standard of care" groups (moderate-paced continuous walking, or stationary biking). Participants will be tested before and after the training and measured regarding gait, balance, strength, flexibility, and quality of life.
Risks are minimal as these procedures are standard physical therapy practice and will be supervised by Dr. Karpatkin. There are no associated costs, although there may be costs associated with transportation to and from the Hunter College Physical Therapy Department.
All data will be de-identified and securely stored.
The study to be conducted at the Hunter College Physical Therapy Department, 425 East 25th Street, New York, N.Y.
To learn more, contact Dr. Herb Karpatkin by phone at 212-396-7115 or email
